It's been quite the day for 6 year olds in the news, a 6 year old girl in Georgia was handcuffed by police and charged with assault after throwing a "tantrum" in her elementary school.

Local tv affiliate 13WMAZ reports that Salecia Johnson' who is in kindergarten' was detained by police after her alleged outburst.

"Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule," Milledgeville Chief of Police Dray Swicord, told the station.

Swicord said the officer who handcuffed Johnson is not facing an investigation over his actions. Swicord added that Johnson was handcuffed for her safety as well as the safety of others. She was taken to the principal's office after pushing two other students, according to a police report.

"The student was never placed in a holding cell or jail cell and the student's safety was of the utmost importance," Swicord said.

However, Johnson's parents are trying to organize a community protest against the officer's actions, including reported plans to contact civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton.

The officer's police report says Johnson began tearing items off the school principal's office walls and was throwing furniture. The report says Johnson knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.

Johnson also was reportedly biting a doorknob and attempting to break a glass frame while jumping on top of a paper shredder.

"She has mood swings some days, which all of us had mood swings some days," Johnson's mother Constance Ruff told WMAZ. "I guess that was just one of her bad days."

After Johnson was handcuffed, she was taken to the local police station and charged with simple assault and damage to property. However, because of her young age, Johnson will reportedly not be prosecuted.

"A 6-year-old in kindergarten. They don't have no business calling the police and handcuffing my child," said Earnest Johnson, Salecia's father.

throwing furniture, jumping off it biting trying to break glass and injuring others.... they call that mood swing?

my kids would have never done that, and I am against violance but sometimes a smak on the butt not to hurt physically, not at all, done instead in a way to just " hurt the pride" and that way the kid learns more, or a 5 minutes in the corner, take the ps3 away or xbox of what even Ixyz thingy for a week or two that will wake them up...

sadly these days kids are kings and queens without any graps of responsibility of their actions why? Because parents do not teach them...

if a kid hit another they will say the one being hit is a cry baby instead of saying that no hiting is wrong, etch...

Anyhow the cuff were probably to much but on the other hand no harm done really maybe just a reality check that; violance is not ok, and there is no discrimination in regards to that, and hurting people is wrong...

but then again this will turn out in a poor little kid who will sadly end up hurting more people on the long ruin why?....

when there is no consequences to her actions.... why should she stop throwing a "tantrum" and hurting people because she is in a mood

FeverDreams
FeverDreams
08:49 Apr 18 2012

Agreed :) Parents should have enforced proper behaviour ...

The mother trying to reason out the child's action by saying that it was 'one of those mood swings' was ridiculars!

The child needs to have her priviledges taken away until she learns to behave. Well at least that's what my mother would have done :)

But the calling the police and having the child arrested was a little too drastic ... I must say ...

But some might disagree and say the child needs to learn about consequences. As such the arrest and handcuffs could scare the child enough to prevent future tantrums.

The police was way too much. But when i was around that age in school, if we messed up, we got whacked with a huge canoe paddle so.... who knows.

if you let a child use their ages an excuse to break the law they're gonna do with their entire lives the child was a danger to themselves and others and needed to be detained I seen children that throw tantrums like this and they need to be disciplined, a teacher is not legally allowed to touch a student, so they called the police if the teacher or principal would have put their hands on the child they could lose their teaching license and possibly be thrown in jail they did the right thing

I agree. Anyone who throws childish, immature tantrums, or anything close, should be disciplined. O.o -cough-

Illegal baby names

Titeuf (France)

In February 2012, a French court ruled against a couple who wished to name their son Titeuf, after the star of a popular cartoon in France. The judge decreed that using the name of a comedy character would "attract mockery" and could risk "constituting a real handicap for a child becoming an adolescent and then an adult".

Has France banned any other names? The Civil Code prohibits names that would be "contrary to the interests of a child". But in November 2011, a couple won their case for naming their son Daemon, after Damon from 'The Vampire Diaries', dispelling supposed satanic connotations. And in 2000 a girl was legally named Megane Renaud, despite similarities to the Renault car.

Chow Tow AKA 'Smelly Head' (Malaysia)

Unlike many countries which are gradually relaxing name laws, Malaysian authorities have cracked down on unsuitable titles in recent years. In 2006 government killjoys published a list of undesirable names that weren't in keeping with the religious traditions of the country – such as Cantonese moniker Chow Tow – which means 'Smelly Head'.

Has Malaysia banned any other names? Lots more Chinese efforts such as Ah Chwar ('Snake'), Khiow Khoo ('Hunchback'), Sor Chai ('Insane'). Malays should also steer clear of Woti, which means 'Sexual Intercourse'.

@ (China)

With more than a billion fellow countrymen, finding a unique name in China is difficult. Perhaps that's why one couple called their baby the '@' symbol – in Chinese characters it apparently looks a bit like 'love him'. Bless. Unsurprisingly, however, the authorities were less sentimental and publicised the moniker as an example of citizens bringing bizarre names into the Chinese language.

Has China banned any other names? The police have control over all names given to children because they issue identity cards, but details of rejections are not widely circulated.

Gesher AKA 'Bridge' (Norway)

Back in 1998 those nasty Norwegians threw a woman in jail (admittedly for only two days) when she failed to pay a fine for giving her son an 'unapproved' name. Eccentric Kristi Larsen said she was instructed in a dream to name her son Gesher (Hebrew for 'Bridge'), but the court were having none of it. Kristi did have 13 children already though, so maybe she had just run out of ideas.

Has Norway banned any other names? Undoubtedly, though in recent times they have replaced their list of officially sanctioned names with a general ban on monikers featuring swearing, sex and illnesses.

Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmncks... (Sweden)

No, we didn't fall asleep on the keyboard. That is an actual name a Swedish couple tried to inflict on their son back in 1996. Apparently the name is pronounced 'Albin' (we're not sure how), and the parents chose it as a protest against Sweden's admittedly strict naming laws. Tax authorities must give their blessing to both first and surnames before they can be used.

Has Sweden banned any other names? Oh yes. Some favourites include Metallica, IKEA, Veranda and Q. Google was OK though.

Akuma AKA Devil (Japan)

Here s a name the Pope definitely wouldn't approve of. In 1993 a Japanese parent called his son Akuma (which literally means Devil). The authorities decided this was an abuse of the parent's rights to decide a child's name and a lengthy court battle ensued. Eventually the father backed down and junior got a new, less demonic name.

Has Japan banned any other names? Lots. Names must use one of the 2,232 'name kanji' characters decided by the government.

Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii (New Zealand)

New Zealand law bans names which could cause offence to a 'reasonable' person. Good thing too - the country is a stupid name hotspot. We found a couple from the islands who tried and failed to call their son '4Real', but nothing beats the ridiculous moniker above. It belonged to a 9-year-old girl before a judge had her renamed during a custody battle. 'It makes a fool of the child,' he said. It certainly made application forms a pain in the butt.

Has New Zealand banned any other names? Oh yes. The judge listed some that were also blocked: Fish and Chips (twins), Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit. Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence were allowed.

Anus (Denmark)

What is it about Scandinavian countries and name laws? The Danes are even tougher than the Swedes in this regard, with parents given 7,000-odd names to choose from by the government. Special permission is needed to deviate from the list, with ethnic names, odd spellings and even compound surnames forbidden. Luckily for him (we assume it's a 'he'), Anus was one of 250-odd names rejected each year.

Has Denmark banned any other names? Well, Pluto and Monkey had lucky escapes...

Venerdi AKA 'Friday' (Italy)

Maybe this is what the Pope was talking about. Back in 2008 a court banned an Italian couple from calling their child Venerdi (translation: Friday). The judges reckoned the name - taken from 'Robinson Crusoe' - would expose the boy to 'mockery' and was associated with 'subservience and insecurity'. The parents, however, might have the last laugh; they threatened to call their next child Mercoledi (Wednesday). Has Italy banned any other names? Italian courts can step in 'when the child's name is likely to limit social interaction and create insecurity'. In Turin, Andrea was rejected (and changed to Emma) as it's a boy's name in Italy. Dalmata has also been rejected, as it means Dalmatian.

Miatt (Germany)

Country living up to stereotype alert! Surprise, surprise the Germans are somewhat officious when it comes to baby naming laws. Regulation-loving Deutschland has an entire department (the Standesamt) which decides if names are suitable. Miatt was rejected because it didn't clearly show whether the child was a boy or a girl, but sometimes the decisions are somewhat arbitrary...

Has Germany banned any other names? The likes of Stompie, Woodstock and Grammophon were turned down, whereas the similarly strange Speedy, Lafayette and Jazz were allowed.

Ovnis (Portugal)

Before naming your child in Portugal, best consult this mammoth, 80-page government doc (and have it translated to English) that tells you which names you can and can't use. It's pretty strict (and random) – Tomás is OK but Tom isn't – and celebs can forget about the likes of Apple and Brooklyn, which aren't even on the banned list. Essex girls rejoice, however – Mercedes is allowed!

Has Portugal banned any other names? There are more than 2,000 names on the reject list, including Ovnis - Portuguese for UFO.

You have to feel bad for those poor kids who get stuck with silly names because their parents want to be different, or are complete whack jobs. I can't say I approve of naming laws, coming from a country where such names as Brooklyn and Apple are perfectly fine for a kid, but sometimes they are for the best.
